On Wednesday, Toyota Motor Corp made an announcement that it will be recalling another batch of 1.7 million cars and trucks of the company from around the world.

Outline
  • Reason behind the recall
  • The injuries caused
  • The death toll

Reason behind the recall

This is because of the great probability of defective air bag inflators of Takata that have been incorporated in these vehicles. The company had announced a  recall campaign in 2016 that was multi-year. This step of Toyota is a part of the same.

The automakers will be adding about 10 million inflators to the vehicle  in the United States. This is the largest recall campaign in the history of recall campaigns.

Ford Motor Co had made an announcement last week that it will be recalling 9,53,000 vehicles from around the world for installing the inflators of Takata.

Now about 16,7 million inflators are remaining to be replaced for the Takata inflators. Earlier more or less 37 million vehicles of the Unites States along with inflators accounting to 50 million were recalled.

The injuries caused

There have been more or less 23 deaths in the world because of the blowout of the air bags Takata that were faulty. The number includes 15 that took place in the United States.

The new recall of Toyota is related to the vehicles which were manufactured in 2010 through 2015. The recall includes 1.3 million vehicles that are currently in the United States.

Injuries that are greater than 290 in number have been associated with Takata inflators. They were faulty and thus could explode. This explosion of the faulty Takata inflators would then have sprayed metal shrapnel inside the vehicle. This in turn would have caused the injuries.

To give the overall figures, 19 car-makers are recalling their vehicles. Their number in total accounts to more than 100 million. This is so as to replace the possibly faulty inflators, from around the world.

The death toll

Until now, Honda Motor Co has been reported of 22 deaths whereas Ford Vehicles was reported of two deaths.

Both the manufacturers have requested the drivers of the older vehicles which belong to the any batch that was manufactured through 2010 up to 2015 to not to drive them. Not until the company replaces the potentially faulty inflators.

In June 2017, Takata had filed bankruptcy protection because of the defect in the inflators which were manufactured by the company.

Key Safety Systems which is an auto component maker had completed the deal for the acquisition of Takata which was worth $1.6 billion.

The resulting merged unit is called as Joyson Safety Systems. This merged unit is actually a subsidiary of the well known Ningbo Joyson Electronic Corp.

In 2018, more than 7.2 million Takata air bag inflators which were defective were repaired by the automakers in the United States.

According to a report which was released last month, the replacing was because of the efforts of the manufacturers to first track down the parts. These parts were the ones that required to be replaced.
