Considered as one of the most humble, Pope Francis, the 266th in the papacy has called upon the faithful in the Catholic Church to pray and stay on vigil against the evil designs of the devil. The Pope has for long been a strong advocate of considering the devil not as a myth or an imaginary character, or a symbolic representation of evil, but a real character.
The Pope has called upon Catholics to pray every day and recite the rosary to intercede on behalf of the church and to keep the evil at bay. The Pope has exhorted believers to pray to St.Michael the Archangel to fight the evil designs of the eternal foe, satan. The prayer that has been recommended by the Pope has largely remained unused in the Mass after the 1960s. The simple prayer is as given here under :
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.
On September 29, the Pope delivered his message to the Catholics of the world, asking everyone to pray for protecting the Church from the evil designs and attacks of Satan. He called upon the Church to be aware of the guilt of the past and the mistakes committed. He wanted everyone to introspect and be aware of the abuses that have been committed in the past, so as to prevent it from happening in the future.
The Pope has always wanted the faithful to look at the devil as an entity and not an idea. IN April this year, he had clearly stated that the devil is not to be considered as a myth or a mere figure of speech. He went on to write that holding this opinion would end up putting people off guard and resulting in individuals become more vulnerable to mistakes and sins.
As expected there were the usual number of comments that targeted the Pope. They made the rather unjustified comments that the Pope was using the name of the devil to clear the name of the clergy involved in the abuse of victims. The Pope has never exonerated any of the clergy or spoke in support of those who have been identified. The Pope has asked everyone to be aware of their actions and guilt and abuse and has requested the faithful to pray for protection from the devil to ensure that these incidents do not repeat themselves.
An Archbishop who is in hiding has teamed up with individuals openly recognized as having views that are opposed to the liberal dogma of Pope Francise. The ultra conservatives have time and again taken potshots at the Pope and this time they have found a willing partner in Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano who has called for the resignation of the Pope in the wake of the reports of sexual misconduct on the part of Cardinal Theodore McCarrick.
