Jennifer Grey won’t start filming the Dirty Dancing sequel until all of its cool parts are moving in sync.
The actress said Tuesday on “Good Morning America” that she won’t be in the planned sequel to her romantic hit from 1987, in which she played a young woman who falls in love with a dance teacher unless she feels it honors the legacy of her late co-star Patrick Swayze, who died in 2009.
We’re not giving up any dates at the moment because… really, what I’m doing, my whole job with this, is to get it right, get it really right, in Patrick’s honor, in honor of all of the fans’ relationship with the movie. If you’re going to do that movie again, it has to be right,
the 62-year-old said.
It’s definitely happening. I’m very excited to say that. It’s something I refuse to do unless it’s perfect, so I’m doing my very best to make sure we honor it.
Lionsgate first talked about a Dirty Dancing sequel at Cinemacon in April 2022. Since then, not much else has been said about the project.
Jennifer Grey did hint on an episode of The Drew Barrymore Show in May 2022 that the movie would have “dancing,” “music,” and “sex.” She also said that Harry Styles might be a good choice to play the new love interest of Frances “Baby” Houseman.
The Dirty Dancing sequel shows how much Hollywood loves Swayze’s movies right now. Channing Tatum recently said that he is working on a remake of the Oscar-winning hit movie Ghost, which came out in 1990. Jake Gyllenhaal is set to star in a remake of the thriller Road House, which came out in 1989.
Grey’s next role is as the controversial church leader Gwen Shamblin in Gwen Shamblin: Starving for Salvation, which will air on Lifetime on Saturday, February 4 at 8 p.m.
