Martin Mull was raised in Chicago by his parents, Betty Mull and Harold Mull, who worked as an actress and director and a carpenter, respectively.

At the age of two, his family relocated to North Ridgeville, Ohio, and lived there until he was 15. Then, they moved again to New Canaan, Connecticut.

He completed his high school education at New Canaan High School and received a degree in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in 1965. He went on to earn a Master of Fine Arts in painting from RISD in 1967.

Career

The soap opera series Mary Hartman and its spinoffs, Fernwood 2 Night and America 2 Night catapulted the actor to stardom during the 1970s.

In addition to his successful acting career, Martin Mull was also highly acclaimed for his musical abilities. He composed songs like “A Girl Named Johnny Cash,” which was sung by Jane Morgan and reached No. 61 on Billboard’s country charts.

Mull’s musical talents were also evident in his contributions to the entertainment industry, including writing the theme song for the 1970 series The 51st State and working as a music producer for the 1971 film Jump.

Fans of 1990s television may recall Mull for his performances on popular series such as Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, and Roseanne.

In 1995, he released a book titled Paintings Drawings and Words, featuring a collection of his artwork. The cover of Joyce Carol Oates’ novel My Sister, My Love (2008) featured one of his paintings. Additionally, Steve Martin’s album Love Has Come for You used another one of his paintings, After Dinner Drinks (2008), which is owned by Martin.

From 1972 to 1978, Martin Mull was married to Kristin Johnson. However, in September of that same year, he entered into a union with Sandra Baker. Following their divorce in November 1981, Martin tied the knot with singer Wendy Haas on June 5, 1982.

In 1986, the couple was blessed with the arrival of their daughter, Maggie. In 2019, Maggie joined the production team of the popular Fox show “Family Guy” and has also contributed as a writer. She has also fulfilled the roles of writer and producer on “Life in Pieces,” a show in which Martin made guest appearances from 2015 to 2017.

Martin Mull, known for his dry and quirky humor and acting, gained popularity in the 1970s and later became a fan favorite as a guest star on shows such as Roseanne and Arrested Development. His daughter announced on June 27, 2024, that he passed away at the age of 80.

According to Maggie Mull, daughter of the late Mull and a TV writer and comic artist, her father passed away at home on Thursday following “a valiant fight against a long illness”.
