The Idol: When is The Weeknd’s New Show Releasing?

The Idol was announced back in July 2022, and three teasers have come out so far. However, except for the general idea of the cast and the fact that The Weeknd produces the show, little is known about it right now.

The sleaziest love story of all times right out of the twisted and sick minds of The Weeknd, Sam Levinson, and Reza Fahim is here! If you were heartbroken when Euphoria Season 2 finale released in February, then this is exactly what are you need. The Idol is about a modern day cult leader and self-help guru who comes into a relationship with a rising pop idol.

The Weeknd, Fahim and Levinson are the executive producers of the show along with Ashley Levinson, Joseph Epstein, Kevin Turen and Aaron L Gilbert. The Weeknd first made an announcement about the show on 29 June 2021 and talked about creating, co-writing executive producing a drama show for HBO.

After principal photography for the show in November 2021, production was halted as The Weeknd got busy co-headlining the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Amy Sedimentz (executive producer of The Girlfriend Experience) left the show after shooting of several episodes.

Amy Sedimentz shared,

“The Idol’s creative team continues to build, refine, and evolve their vision for the show, and they have aligned on a new creative direction.”

After Amy, Sam Levinson took charge to direct the show’s new version. The Idol’s production completed in July 2022 and here’s what we know about it so far!

Jocelyn’s passion is ignited again when she meets an enigmatic club owner Tedros, and their romantic story begins.

According to the official synopsis, the show centers around a female pop singer Jocelyn who derails her last tour due to a nervous breakdown. However, as she aims at becoming  America’s sexiest pop star, Jocelyn refuses to give up.

Jocelyn’s passion is ignited again when she meets an enigmatic club owner Tedros, and their romantic story begins.

Teaser of The Idol

On 17 July 2022, The Idol’s first teaser was released. Even though the trailer didn’t give many details, but it did hint at lots of partying, drugs, dancing, romance, sex, flashy cars and the glamour of Hollywood. There was also a sneak-peak into Tedros and Jocelyn’s relationship.

The second trailer came out on 21 August 2022 and the third one on 6 October 2022, keeping the secrets in place. It revealed the cast members of the show.

A promotional video on HBO Max revealed that The Idol will release in 2023.

The show will be available on HBO and HBO Max. You can get a subscription at $9.99/month or a premium subscription at $14.99/month. The show will consist of six episodes.

Cast of The Idol

Lily-Rose Depp got the lead role as Jocelyn. She is known for her role of Isadora Duncan in The Dancer. She also got a nomination for the Most Promising Actress for Cesar Awards. Lily is also famous for her role in The King and Voyagers.

The role of Tedros will be played by none other than The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye). The Grammy Award Winning songwriter and singer is surely the best fit for this role. The Weeknd has also made an appearance in Uncut Gems in 2019.

Troye Sivan will also star in The Idol. In 2009, Sivan played the role of a young Wolverine in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Other cast members will include Primetime Emmy Award Winner Dan Levy, Suzanna Son, Jennie Ruby Jane, Moses Sumney, Eli Roth, Jane Adamd, Rachel Sennoth, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Hank Azaria and Mike Dean.
