New England Patriots' QB Draft Strategy Sparks Debate Among Analysts

The New England Patriots made waves during the NFL Draft by selecting two quarterbacks, a strategic decision that caught the eye of many analysts. Their choice to pick North Carolina’s Drake Maye with the third overall selection wasn’t surprising, but the addition of Tennessee’s Joe Milton in the sixth round stirred up controversy and concern from NFL legend and former quarterback Phil Simms.

New England Patriots Draft Two Quarterbacks

Drake Maye was seen as the New England Patriots’ main quarterback of the future, drafted to take over and lead New England’s offense. But the team also acquired Milton later in the draft, raising questions about the impact on Drake Maye’s development. Milton’s selection was met with mixed reactions, with Simms offering strong criticism of the decision.

Phil Simms’ Concern Over Joe Milton Pick

Phil Simms voiced his disapproval of the New England Patriots’ strategy, believing it could complicate the situation for their primary quarterback, Maye.

“I hated it,” said Simms on his podcast, The Simms Complete. “I hated it for Drake Maye. … There’s nothing like being a quarterback and walking out on the field and physically being the best capable guy. Now you’re gonna put Joe Milton in that process, another rookie, that even to me makes it worse.”

Phil Simms emphasized that while Milton’s physical talents are notable, this dual-quarterback scenario could undermine Maye’s confidence, limiting his ability to establish himself firmly as the team’s starter.

Joe Milton’s Potential

Joe Milton is no slouch when it comes to athletic potential. He had an impressive 2023 season, passing for 2,813 yards, 20 touchdowns, and five interceptions while boasting a 64.7% completion rate. Additionally, he rushed for 299 yards and seven touchdowns. At 6-foot-5 and around 245 pounds, his physicality, arm strength, and mobility make him an intriguing prospect.

“There has even been chatter of him switching to tight end, although Milton has said that won’t be happening,” noted Simms.

New England Patriots’ Draft Sparks Quarterback Debate

The New England Patriots’ decision to draft Milton seems logical from an organizational perspective, providing depth at the quarterback position and adding a different set of skills. However, Simms and other skeptics worry this move could shake Maye’s confidence or create unnecessary pressure on the young signal-caller.

While head coach Bill Belichick is known for unconventional decisions, how these two rookie quarterbacks navigate their roles could define New England’s future success. Will Maye remain the primary leader, or will Milton’s presence bring about an unexpected competition?
