To make it more affordable for customers, Netflix launched a ‘Basic with Ads plan’ in November last year. This new plan will cost $6.00 per month due to licensing limitations. It will offer its customers limited content with 15 to 30 seconds of ads before or during the movies or episodes.

The streaming platform giant notices a decrease in its users due to other emerging subscription and streaming services apart from Netflix. To lure back its customers, Netflix launched this new ‘Basic with Ads plan’.
What is the hidden cost?
The ad-supported membership plan costing $6.99 per month has changed the structure of its membership plans significantly. The Standard plan costs $15.49 per month and is more expensive than the new plan with ads.
Even though the new plan costs less, study shows that customers will spend more time watching movies and shows on the ad-supported plan. It may not cost the customers money, but it will definitely cost them their time.
Honcho study shows,
“The research found that on average, consumers spend 461.06 hours annually watching their favorite films and shows on Netflix. However, with the ‘Basic with Ads’ plan, the consumer could spend an additional 38.42 hours watching Netflix per year due to the adverts.”
Ads will run for approximately 4-5 minutes per hour. Also, the video quality will be reduced from 1080p to 720p and feature only selected movies and shows.
