Early Life & Education

Iman Shumpert was born on June 26, 1990, in Berwyn, Illinois. In eighth grade, he and fellow NBA player Evan Turner were teammates on the same basketball team at Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School in Oak Park, Illinois.

After that, he went on to Oak Park and River Forest High School. He did well as a first-team all-state player and was one of the top 30 seniors in the country. He played a crucial role in Oak Park and River Forest’s success, leading them to three conference championships and earning the title of conference MVP during his junior and senior years.

Scout.com ranked him as the 15th-best senior player in the country, while Rivals.com ranked him 26th. Additionally, he was chosen to participate in the 2008 McDonald’s All-American Game and was recognized as a third-team Parade All-American.

Career

In 2008–09, as a freshman at Georgia Tech, Iman Shumpert was the fourth-leading scorer, averaging 10.5 points per game and hitting 34.5% of his three-point shots. In 2009–10, he had knee surgery and missed six games but still finished as the third-leading scorer with 10.0 points per game.

In the 2010–11 season, Shumpert led his team in scoring (17.3 ppg), rebounds, and assists. He was only the seventh player in ACC history to achieve this.

He ranked fourth in ACC scoring, 15th in rebounds, 10th in field goal and free throw percentage, and first in steals. He was named to the All-ACC second team and the all-defensive team.

Iman Shumpert also holds the Georgia Tech record for steals per game. On March 28, 2011, Shumpert declared for the NBA draft, foregoing his final year of college eligibility.

In 2011, Shumpert was chosen as the 17th pick in the NBA Draft by the New York Knicks. He immediately became known for his strong defensive skills on the perimeter and impressive athleticism.

However, his career reached its peak during his tenure with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was important in the team’s memorable 2016 NBA Championship. He played with LeBron James and Kyrie Irving to beat the Golden State Warriors 3-1.

Iman Shumpert played for the Sacramento Kings, Houston Rockets, and Brooklyn Nets for 10 years. He always played well defensively and was a leader in the locker room.

In addition to his basketball career, he has also found success in the entertainment industry, most notably by winning the 2021 season of “Dancing with the Stars” and becoming the first retired NBA player to do so.
