Revitalizing the Crucible in Destiny 2’s Latest Season

In their latest weekly blog update, Bungie has announced significant changes to the Crucible, Destiny 2’s player-versus-player (PvP) mode, set to launch with Season 23. These changes come in response to player feedback, which has highlighted the need for a refresh and new content in the Crucible. Destiny 2 game director Joe Blackburn confirmed the formation of a Crucible strike team dedicated to enhancing the game’s PvP aspects.

Introducing New Modes and Rewards in Season 23

One of the most notable additions in Season 23 is the new game mode called Sparrow Control. This mode evolves from a bug on the Multiplex map into an official gameplay feature. Additionally, the season’s ritual weapon, Chivalric Fire, a heavy void caster sword, will be attainable through the Crucible, Vanguard, and Gambit playlists. However, the upcoming season will also bring several major changes to the existing playlist structure.

Playlist Changes and Quickplay Nodes

The Crucible Strike Team has outlined several planned changes, including the return of the 3v3 Quickplay node, which will focus on connection and latency, rotating through game modes like Elimination and Showdown. When Trials of Osiris is active over the weekend, it will take over this node. Furthermore, a new 6v6 Quickplay node will consolidate the Relentless and Party nodes, accompanied by an unranked 6v6 option featuring variations of the Control mode.

Crucible Experience Enhancements

Bungie also plans to tweak the overall Crucible experience in Destiny 2, focusing on map spawning, matchmaking, and skill systems adjustments. The Competitive Division will shift its focus from performance to wins and losses, with changes in promotion and relegation requirements for certain ranks. Trials of Osiris will introduce new small weekly rewards based on the number of wins achieved before a loss.

Focused Gear and Legacy Crucible Menu

Season 23 introduces a new way for players to focus gear, extending this mechanic to retired Competitive rewards available through Lord Shaxx’s Legacy Crucible menu. Players will have to complete placement matches and will be limited in their weekly focuses based on their highest achieved rank in the season. However, the cost for focusing will be substantial, requiring three Crucible engrams and 25,000 Glimmer.
