Couple Opts to Swap Out Traditional Flower Girls for All of Their Grandmoms

Let’s face it: it’s hard to plan a wedding. There are a lot of decisions to make, and you want to make sure that all of your family and friends are included where they should be.

Having a big family and being close to everyone makes this even harder. How do you make sure that everyone is there?

One way to do this is to break with traditions, which is what Lyndsey and Tanner Raby did at their wedding in Benton, Tennessee.

The bride and groom really wanted to include all four of their grandmothers in their wedding, but they also wanted to make it special for them. Since they were so close to all four of them, they didn’t think it would be fair for them to just walk down the aisle or wave to the guests.

Lyndsey and Tanner decided to make their grandmothers their flower girls instead.

Now, when most people think of a flower girl, they picture a girl no older than three tossing flower petals as she walks down the aisle of a wedding. But who says a woman who is older can’t do the same?

I thought it was such a sweet way to involve them,

Lyndsey said.

They mean the world to us and we were so grateful to have them here with us because a lot of people don’t even get one [at their wedding].

Some of Lyndsey’s flower girls were her 90-year-old maternal great-grandmother Kathleen Brown; Tanner’s paternal grandmother Joyce Raby, who is 70, Lyndsey’s paternal grandmother Wanda Grant, who is 76; and her maternal grandmother Betty Brown, who is 72.

Women in matching dresses threw flower petals as they walked down the aisle. The grandmothers, of course, got to choose the dress. Even though they are older, that doesn’t mean they aren’t into fashion.

It took us a while to find the right dress, they were divas about it,

Lyndsey explained.

The four grandmothers who were flower girls at the wedding were a huge hit, and the bride and groom are so thankful that they were all able to come and play an important role. They thought it was so cool that all four of them were able to come to their wedding since that doesn’t happen very often these days.

I’m so lucky,

the 24-year-old bride said.

A lot of women don’t get one grandparent at their wedding and I was blessed to have all of them.

How cute was it that these grandmothers were asked to be flower girls? Have you ever seen another couple do something similar? What’s the most non-traditional thing you’ve seen at a wedding that really stood out to you? Let us know in the comments section below!
