Is The Last Witch Hunter 2 happening?
YES! Vin Diesel confirms the making of The Last Witch Hunter 2 despite the fact that the first film was somewhat of a box office dud. Did you know that the movie had a reported $90 million production budget and only went on to accumulate $27.4 million at the domestic box office? Even though the movie’s international box office performance wasn’t disastrous, its global gross of $147 million didn’t exactly scream “Franchise starter.”
Well, Vin Diesel has done an excellent job of maximising his opportunities throughout his career. He made Fast & Furious into one of the most popular franchises, joined The Avengers and is now reportedly poised to make a huge flop into an improbable franchise. The Last Witch Hunter was released a little over four years ago, but it seems that Vin Diesel is still thinking about the project, and he and the producer are working to get a sequel made.
What was The Last Witch Hunter about?
In that movie, Diesel starred as Kaulder, the warrior who was responsible for murdering the Witch Queen (Julie Engelbrecht) 800 years ago. The problem is that she curses Kaulder with immortality before leaving.
Cut to Kaulder working for the Axe and Cross, an organisation devoted to putting an end to witches, in the present. Everything appears to be going according to plan until Dolan the 36th (Michael Caine) is attacked and Kaulder learns the Witch Queen is to blame.
When asked how Vin Diesel moves forward when a passion project doesn’t turn out as hoped, he said,
“When a Last Witch Hunter comes out and it doesn’t destroy the box office you, under the old thinking, would go, ‘Well, maybe I should focus on something else.’ But nowadays what’s fascinating is that movies find you somehow.”
He also adds that It seems the movie must have done quite well on VOD and perhaps on streaming in the years since it was released.
The Last Witch Hunter was directed by Breck Eisner from a screenplay written by Cory Goodman, Matt Sazama, and Burk Sharpless. Diesel produced with Mark Canton and Bernie Goldmann. It starred Diesel along with Elijah Wood, Rose Leslie, Julie Engelbrecht, and Michael Caine. Summit Entertainment released it on October 23, 2015.
After eight years, the filmmakers are looking for another part as a sequel for this movie. They don’t really care about the bad critics and this motivated them to make a good movie.
In an interview, he spoke about his career and said ,
“As an artist, the more experienced I get, the more I am appreciating just the fact that my work somehow finds you and that you get to experience it at your own time and at your own pace, and I’m less concerned, and maybe it’s because of accolades.”
“Maybe it’s because I’m a part of Avengers or I’m a part of Disney, I’m a part of Guardians and I’m a part of Fast and I’ve had so much of that wonderful experience that I think the higher thinking becomes, when people tell me that they love the Witch Hunter, and they want to see Michael Caine and I go into another one, I go, ‘Wow!'”
Well, the statement that caught everyone was
“Lionsgate is coming and saying, ‘We’re putting a writer on for the next one.’ That’s kinda cool! … And this is just recent, by the way. But it’s funny that you mentioned Last Witch Hunter because I’m in a meeting with Lionsgate and they’re actively creating the sequel to The Last Witch Hunter.”
