Nick Mohammed is a British actor, comedian, and writer. He played the role of Nathan Shelley in the Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso, for which he received nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series at both the 73rd and 74th Primetime Emmy Awards.
Childhood & Education
Nicholas George Mohammed was born in Leeds, England. His mother was a general practitioner who was born in Cyprus, while his father, who was born in Trinidad, worked in the legal field.
Nick Mohammed received his education at Abbey Grange High School, located in Leeds. He declined an opportunity to pursue studies at the University of Cambridge and opted instead to study geophysics at Durham University.
There, he was affiliated with St. Aidan’s College and participated as a violinist in the university orchestra. Although he auditioned for the Durham Revue on two occasions, he was unsuccessful in gaining admission and subsequently engaged with the local comedy scene.
After finishing his degree at Durham, Mohammed continued his education with a PhD in geophysics at Magdalene College, Cambridge. His fascination with comedy motivated him to audition for the Cambridge Footlights, which he accomplished successfully.
Nick Mohammed’s Career
Nick Mohammed appeared in the second season of BBC One’s Reggie Perrin and served as a co-presenter on the BBC Three comedy series The King Is Dead, alongside Simon Bird and Katy Wix.
He made guest appearances in Pete & Dud: The Lost Sketches, Miranda, How Not to Live Your Life, and Life’s Too Short, and he was featured in Series 2 Episode 4 of the BBC Radio 4 musical comedy program Alex Horne Presents The Horne Section.
After his successful debut on BBC Radio 4 with Quarters, Mohammed’s second series, Nick Mohammed in Bits, received additional critical praise. He was part of the cast in the BAFTA-nominated CBBC sketch program, Sorry, I’ve Got No Head.
Mohammed is best recognized for his character, Mr. Swallow, a megalomaniac magician. He originally developed this character while involved with the Cambridge Footlights.
Mohammed created The Mr. Swallow Show for BBC Television and wrote and starred in an original comedy-drama named Magic for Channel 4 as part of the Coming Up Scheme.
He appeared as Mr. Love in the CBBC series Hank Zipzer. He also made guest appearances in the concluding episode of series 1 and the opening episode of series 2 of Uncle.
In 2018, it was announced that he would join forces on a new comedy series called Intelligence with David Schwimmer for Sky One.
From 2020 to 2023, he played the character Nathan “Nate” Shelley in the Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso, which continued for three seasons on Apple TV+.
In 2023, Nick Mohammed featured as a police officer in the film Maggie Moore(s), alongside Jon Hamm and Tina Fey. He competed as a contestant on the 17th series of the Channel 4 program Taskmaster, which launched in March 2024.
In November 2024, Mohammed launched A Christmas Carol (ish) in London’s West End for the festive season. The production was a reinterpretation of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol, featuring Mr. Swallow as the main character, alongside Martha Howe-Douglas, David Elms, and Kieran Hodgson.
He initially created the show at the Soho Theatre in 2022. In 2025, he will be touring the UK as Mr. Swallow in a new live performance titled Show Pony.
Wife & Kids
Nick Mohammed is married to Becka, who is a teacher. The couple is blessed with two sons and a daughter. His eldest son has an eidetic memory.
