The Strategic Maneuvers of the Pittsburgh Steelers for the 2024 NFL Draft A Deep Dive

The arrival of quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Justin Fields marks a significant shift for the Steelers, aiming to enhance the team’s versatility and unpredictability. Head coach Mike Tomlin emphasized the need to “keep defenses off balance,” a strategy that Wilson and Fields are well-equipped to execute, given their tendencies to hold onto the ball longer than their peers.

However, this style of play brings its challenges, notably the increased risk of sacks. Both quarterbacks were among the most sacked in the league, prompting an urgent need to bolster the offensive line for better protection.

The Offensive Line Conundrum For Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers’ offensive line has notably struggled, particularly in pass protection. As Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported, there is anticipation that Pittsburgh might trade up in the 2024 NFL Draft to secure a top offensive line prospect. This move would address a critical gap left by Mason Cole, who, despite his dedication—playing 100 percent of the offensive snaps and handling adjustment calls—showed inconsistency and is no longer with the team.

Draft Strategies and Potential Trades

Given their No. 20 overall pick, the Steelers have a strategic decision to make. Historically, centers are not commonly selected in the first round, but Pittsburgh’s successful experience drafting center Maurkice Pouncey in 2010, who became a nine-time Pro Bowler, might influence their approach. An intriguing possibility exists in Oregon’s Jackson Powers-Johnson, a top center prospect who, despite being a one-year starter, garnered the Rimington Award and unanimous All-American honors.

The Steelers also have the flexibility to adjust their draft position by trading down or moving up. They are reportedly considering trading their second-round pick along with third and fourth-round picks to acquire a higher second-round pick. This move could strategically position them ahead of other teams interested in securing a top center, such as the Arizona Cardinals.

Looking Ahead: A Dynamic Offensive Lineup

In addition to center, the Steelers may also need to address the tackle position. Last year, they drafted Broderick Jones with plans to transition him from right tackle, where he briefly played, back to left tackle. This switch was necessitated by Dan Moore’s difficulties in adjusting to the opposite side, highlighting ongoing adjustments within the team’s offensive line.

As the 2024 NFL Draft approaches, the Steelers’ meeting with top offensive linemen at the NFL Scouting Combine and various pro days indicates a clear focus on strengthening their front line. The team’s interactions with prospects from Duke, Georgia, and Oregon underline their commitment to a robust recruitment strategy.

The Steelers are poised for a season of transformation, aiming to construct a team that can effectively support their new quarterback duo while adapting to the evolving dynamics of the NFL. The moves they make in the coming months will be crucial in shaping their trajectory and ultimately, their success in the 2024 season.
