Matthew Koma who was born on June 2, 1987, grew up in Seaford, New York on Long Island after being born in Brooklyn. His father, Gerald D. Bair, was a singer and songwriter, and Koma’s first stage performance was alongside his father at the age of four.

Koma wrote his first song at just nine years old and attributes his early musical influences to Elvis Costello and Bruce Springsteen. He later attended Seaford High School.

Career

In June 2011, Matthew Koma inked a deal with Jimmy Iovine’s Interscope Records after Iovine was impressed by his acoustic rendition of the song “She”. Nearly a year later, in May 2012, Koma dropped his debut EP, Parachute.

He took on the roles of writer, producer, and co-producer for all four tracks, working alongside Twice as Nice, Alex da Kid, Sam Watters, Louis Biancaniello, and Ari Levine.

In 2012, Koma was the lead vocalist on “End of Pretend” by Black Cards and co-produced a remix of Bruce Springsteen’s “Rocky Ground” with Ron Aniello. The remix was included on Springsteen’s album Wrecking Ball.

Matthew Koma became a part of the Sorry for Party Rocking Tour with LMFAO and Far East Movement in 2012 and later joined Owl City on tour. The following year, he accompanied Ellie Goulding on her European tour with Charli XCX and also collaborated with DJ Hardwell on the single “Dare You.”

In March 2014, Koma was featured on Showtek’s track “Cannonball (Earthquake)”. Additionally, Koma collaborated with RAC for their first album, lending vocals to the song “Cheap Sunglasses”, and was also featured on Audien’s single “Serotonin”.

Two tracks on Afrojack’s 2014 album “Forget the World”, titled “Keep our Love Alive” and “Illuminate”, were both written and sung by Koma.”

Matthew Koma was highlighted in Kia Motors’ web series Rediscovered in January 2015, where he performed a rendition of The Miracles’ “The Tracks of My Tears”.

During the recording, Smokey Robinson made a surprise appearance in the studio. Koma also joined forces with The Knocks for their single “I Wish (My Taylor Swift)” in September 2015, which was included on their album 55 in 2016.

In 2016, he collaborated with Britney Spears on her album Glory, contributing to the creation of the track “Swimming in the Stars”, which was made available to the public in 2020. The following year, Koma produced multiple songs for Shania Twain‘s fifth studio album Now, including the popular lead single “Life’s About to Get Good”. He also made an appearance on the 2017 Downes Braide Association album Skyscraper Souls.

In 2018, Matthew Koma released “On the 5”, a new single and music video as part of his new project, Winnetka Bowling League, through RCA Records. In August 2020, he collaborated on the writing and production of Keith Urban’s single “Change Your Mind”.

On May 9, 2019, Matthew Koma proposed to Hilary Duff after dating her. The couple tied the knot on December 21, 2019, at their residence in Los Angeles. They share three daughters and he also became a stepfather to Duff’s son from her previous marriage to ice hockey player Mike Comrie.
