Early Life & Education

Matthew Goode was born on April 3, 1978, in Exeter, Devon. His father, Anthony, worked as a geologist, while his mother, Jennifer, is a nurse and an amateur theater director.

Goode is the youngest among five siblings, who include a brother, two half-brothers, and a half-sister, television presenter Sally Meen, from his mother’s prior marriage. He spent his childhood in the village of Clyst St. Mary, located near Exeter.

Goode received his education at Exeter School, an independent institution in Exeter, Devon, before attending the University of Birmingham and the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London.

Matthew Goode portrayed Peter Lynley, the sibling of Inspector Lynley, in the BBC series Inspector Lynley Mysteries: A Suitable Vengeance and also appeared in the television film Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister.

In 2004, Goode made his debut in American cinema alongside Mandy Moore in the romantic comedy Chasing Liberty.

Matthew Goode appeared alongside Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Scarlett Johansson in Woody Allen’s thriller Match Point and starred with Piper Perabo and Lena Headey in Ol Parker’s romantic comedy Imagine Me & You.

He also featured in the TV film My Family and Other Animals with Imelda Staunton, the biographical-musical drama Copying Beethoven alongside Ed Harris and Diane Kruger, and Scott Frank’s crime drama The Lookout opposite Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

In 2008, Goode took on the role of Charles Ryder in the drama film Brideshead Revisited, which is based on the novel of the same name by Evelyn Waugh.

In 2009, he co-starred in Zack Snyder‘s superhero film Watchmen as Ozymandias/Adrian Veidt and appeared alongside Colin Firth in the drama film A Single Man, adapted from Christopher Isherwood’s novel. In 2010, he starred opposite Amy Adams in the romantic comedy Leap Year.

In 2013, Matthew Goode took on the leading role in the BBC Two drama Dancing on the Edge, where he played magazine columnist Stanley Mitchell. That year, he also co-starred with Mia Wasikowska and Nicole Kidman in the psychological thriller film Stoker.

In March 2014, Goode became a member of the cast of the CBS legal drama The Good Wife, portraying Finley “Finn” Polmar, a state prosecutor.

He took over the role of Will Gardner during the fifth season, making his first appearance in the 15th episode titled “Dramatics, Your Honor”. In May 2015, Goode departed from The Good Wife following the conclusion of the sixth season.

In 2014, Matthew Goode was a co-star in the ITV drama Downton Abbey during the Christmas special of Season 5, which was titled “A Moorland Holiday,” where he played the role of Henry Talbot.

He returned to the series in October 2015, starting with the fourth episode of the sixth season. Moreover, Goode made a brief appearance in the Downton Abbey film that was released in 2019.

Matthew’s depiction of Anthony Armstrong-Jones, 1st Earl of Snowdon, in the Netflix series “The Crown” highlighted his talent for infusing depth and complexity into real-life figures.

In 2022, Matthew took on the role of Robert Evans in the Paramount+ series “The Offer,” which narrates the story behind the creation of “The Godfather.” He also delivered a strong performance in the latest Netflix thriller, Dept. Q.
