James Christopher Gaffigan was born on July 7, 1966, in Elgin, Illinois. He was brought up in Chesterton, Indiana, along with his five siblings by his parents Marcia Mitchell, a philanthropist and event organizer, and Michael A. Gaffigan, a financial executive who previously held the position of president and CEO at Mercantile National Bank of Indiana. Sadly, both his mother and father passed away from cancer; his mother in 1990, and his father in 1999.

Jim Gaffigan frequently tuned in to comedy programs such as “Saturday Night Live” as a teenager. While his father was the first in their family to receive a college education, he urged his children to do the same and pursue more reliable professions. Despite this, Gaffigan was determined to follow his passion for acting from age five.

After attending La Lumiere School in La Porte, Indiana, and playing on the football team, he went on to pursue his education at Purdue University. However, after only one year, he transferred to Georgetown University. In 1988, he obtained a degree in Finance from Georgetown.

Career

In 1990, Jim Gaffigan relocated from Indiana to New York with the goal of pursuing a career in comedy, inspired by his admiration for the renowned comedian, David Letterman.

He began his journey by performing in various comedy clubs, but it wasn’t until 1999 that he caught the attention of his audience with a standout performance on The Late Show with David Letterman.
