His father, Michael McAloney (1924–2000), was an Irish actor and producer, renowned for his Tony Award-winning production of Brendan Behan’s Borstal Boy, an autobiographical play about a young member of the Irish Republican Army, which became the first Irish production to receive top honors on Broadway.

Education

At the age of 14, Holt McCallany left home and boarded a Greyhound bus to Los Angeles in pursuit of his aspiration to become an actor; however, he found himself working in a factory unloading trucks instead.

Eventually, his parents located him and returned him to Ireland, enrolling him in a boarding school in County Kildare, Newbridge College, which his father had attended four decades prior.

He left Ireland and came back to graduate from Creighton Prep in 1981. Post high school, he studied French at the Sorbonne, art at the Paris American Academy, and theater at L’École Marcel Marceau and L’École Jacques Lecoq.
