Martin has had his fair share of experience in the realm of unforgettable series conclusions, it’s not his own show that stands out most to him.
Martin’s Take on the “Perfect” TV Episode
When “Game of Thrones” wrapped up, it left the TV world divided. The finale had Bran Stark taking the Iron Throne, with Jon Snow exiled for the death of Daenerys Targaryen. Despite the tumultuous reception of his own series, Martin recently revealed his personal pick for the best television finale. In response to Vanity Fair’s recognition of his “Game of Thrones” episode “Blackwater” as one of the top 25 episodes in the past quarter-century, Martin took to his Not A Blog to share his thoughts.
Martin stated, “If I had to pick one episode that was even more perfect than all the others on the list, though, it would have to be the final episode of Six Feet Under… that last episode was far and away the best finale in the entire history of television, and I cannot imagine how anyone could possibly do better.”
The Jon Snow Spinoff: A Second Chance?
There’s no denying the profound impact “Game of Thrones” has had on television. Every character, from Daenerys to Tyrion Lannister, had fan theories surrounding their destinies. However, few could have predicted Bran Stark’s ultimate fate.
But as much as Bran’s ascension was a twist, the absence of Jon Snow from the Iron Throne was even more surprising. Many fans had pictured Kit Harrington’s character eventually ruling Westeros. Yet, the ending crafted by showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss chose a different path.
Now, whispers of a Jon Snow spinoff offer a ray of hope. While HBO hasn’t given the official nod yet, Martin hinted last year that a show centered on Jon Snow’s life beyond the Wall was in the early stages, based on a pitch by Harrington. This potential series could offer a fresh take on Snow’s journey and, possibly, provide the ending many felt he deserved.
In the vast realm of TV conclusions, only time will tell if the Jon Snow spinoff can echo the brilliance Martin sees in “Six Feet Under’s” finale.
