Emory Isaac Cohen, who is of Jewish descent, was born on March 13, 1990, in the bustling city of Manhattan, New York. He is the only child of Donna and Noel Cohen, both professionals in the education field. His roots in New York City can be traced back four generations to his Russian ancestors.

Cohen’s first appearance on stage was as Mr. Peachum in a student rendition of The Threepenny Opera at the Robert F. Wagner Jr. Secondary School for Arts and Technology. Alma Whitney and Oskar Sarasky directed the play.

After completing his education at Elisabeth Irwin High School in 2008, he was awarded a full scholarship to pursue acting at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He spent two years training at UArts before leaving to continue his acting studies in New York.

In 2008, Emory Cohen’s first appearance in a full-length film was in Afterschool, where he acted alongside Ezra Miller. The movie was first shown at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival and was well-received by reviewers. He then went on to star in the 2010 dramatic film The Hungry Ghosts.

In 2012, he shared the screen with Bradley Cooper and Dane DeHaan in Derek Cianfrance’s crime drama, The Place Beyond the Pines. The movie was well-received by critics and performed well at the box office.

In the first season of Smash, Emory Cohen played the role of Leo, the son of Debra Messing’s character, and also appeared as Wendell Pierce’s romantic partner in the independent movie Four.

In 2014, he was featured in the drama film The Gambler as a tennis player and also starred in the indie movie Beneath the Harvest Sky. The following year, he played the role of Tony, the romantic interest of Saoirse Ronan’s character Eilis, in the film Brooklyn. Rex Reed highly praised his exceptional and emotionally impactful acting.

The film was released on Netflix in September of that year and immediately became the top choice for viewers, reaching the number one spot by mid-September. Under the direction of Jeremy Saulnier, Cohen shared the screen with actors Aaron Pierre, Don Johnson, and AnnaSophia Robb.
