After a morning full of issues and delays with jury, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman’s trial started in Brooklyn on Tuesday. The first round was full of explosive opening statements, the defense alleged Mexico’s president of taking bribe of hundreds of millions from Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, leader of a Sinaloa cartel.
On the other hand, El Chapo was alleged by the federal prosecutors for controlling massive global narco-empire which is worth billions of dollars and he has been doing this since thirty years. El Chapo has shipped tons of cocaine and various other drugs, said Prosecutor Adam Fels. He is also behind multiple murders.
Jeffrey Lichtman, El Chapo’s lawyer, said that El Mayo has framed El Chapo to run the Sinaloa cartel and El Mayo is the true mastermind. He added,
While the world focuses on this mythical Chapo figure, the world is not focusing on Mayo Zambada. He bribes the entire government of Mexico, including up to the very top, the current president of Mexico.
Lichtman claims that El Chapo has been put in spotlight by El Mayo who corrupted the Mexican government’s members and working along DEA. He is the most wanted fugitives in the US, but the US government is only pretending to want him. The government of US and El Mayo work together whenever they want to.
Enrique Pena Nieto, the Mexican president, denied the charge. The spokesman said that the Mexican government extradited Joaquin Guzman Loera and his lawyer’s affirmations are defamatory and false.
The charges were also denied by Felipe Calderon, Mexico’s previous president. Prosecutor Fels has made a promise to that jury that Guzman will himself confess his crimes. The case is likely to hinge on testimony by cooperating witnesses who have lied all their lives as per the defense.
