Cody Fern was born in Southern Cross, a rural town in Western Australia, on 6 July 1988. He received his education at Merredin Senior High School, a boarding school, and earned an Honours Degree in Commerce from Curtin University of Technology in 2009.

Career

At first, Cody Fern had contemplated a career in finance but later decided to pursue acting. In an interview with Anthem Magazine, he revealed that he disliked his job in finance. The Cate Blanchett-led movie series Elizabeth and Elizabeth: The Golden Age inspired him to become an actor.

Fern has received training from notable acting coaches such as Ellen Burstyn, Larry Moss, and Susan Batson. She also received praise for her portrayal of Albert in the National Theatre of Great Britain’s production of War Horse.

In 2011, Cody Fern played Romeo in Shakespeare WA’s production of Romeo and Juliet and Lindsay in the Black Swan Theatre Company’s Jandamarra. He also played the Earl of Southampton in the State Theatre of Western Australia’s first-ever production of The Enchanters.

He has been featured in numerous short films, such as the acclaimed Still Take You Home (2010) which won the Western Australian Screen Award, and The Last Time I Saw Richard (2014).

Cody Fern was selected as the recipient of the Australians in Film’s Heath Ledger Scholarship in 2014. This prestigious award is designed to assist Australian actors by providing financial and career support.

This includes a monetary prize and a two-year scholarship at the Stella Adler Academy of Acting and Theatre in Los Angeles, as well as mentorship from Heath Ledger’s father.

In 2017, he played Jim Mason in The Tribes of Palos Verdes. He also wrote, directed, and starred in the short film Pisces, with Keir Gilchrist. During an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Fern originally intended to take a break from acting for 18 months to concentrate on Pisces. However, he ended up taking on the opportunity to act in Versace.

In 2018, Cody Fern made his television debut in the acclaimed FX true crime anthology series The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story as David Madson which earned him the Gold Derby TV Award for Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor and a nomination for Breakthrough Performer of the Year.

In the last season of House of Cards, he was introduced as Duncan Shepherd, the series’ regular character. In that same year, he played Michael Langdon, the Antichrist, in the eighth episode of the horror show American Horror Story, called Apocalypse. The following year, he appeared as Xavier Plympton in the ninth season of American Horror Story, titled 1984.

Cody Fern took on multiple roles in the American Horror Story franchise, appearing as Stan Vogel in the 2021 episode “Feral,” Valiant Thor in the series Double Feature: Death Valley, and Thomas Browne in the 2022 episode “Milkmaids.” In addition, he played the character of Jacob, a priest, in the upcoming film Father Stu, set to release in 2022.
