Callum Robilliard Turner was born on 15 February 1990 in Hammersmith. He grew up in Chelsea, London, on a council estate under the care of his single mother, who was a club promoter. Despite leaving school early to pursue semi-professional football, he eventually found success as a model, worked in retail, and ultimately pursued acting.

Turner’s middle name was given in honor of his mother’s friend, the late poet David Robilliard, who passed away two years before Turner’s birth. During an interview at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, Turner revealed that his mother’s passion for film greatly influenced his decision to pursue acting.

Career

In 2010, Callum Turner began his profession as a model, appearing for well-known brands like Next and Reebok. He then made his acting debut in a student film called “Think of England” produced by the University of Hertfordshire’s Film and Television program.

In 2011, Turner played the role of Tony in Zero, a film directed by David Barrouk and produced by Michael Riley. The following year, he acted alongside Ben-Ryan Davies from Waterloo Road in the short film Human Beings, directed by Jonathan Entwistle.

In 2012, he made an appearance in the music video “Time to Dance” by French group The Shoes, alongside Jake Gyllenhaal. In 2012, Turner acted in ITV’s Leaving, co-starring with Helen McCrory. His performance received predominantly favorable critiques.

Later in December 2012, Turner played the role of Ashley, a troubled teenager, alongside Andrew Scott and Martin Clunes in ITV’s drama The Town. He also made a brief appearance in Showtime’s historical-fiction series The Borgias as Calvino in early 2013.

Turner mentioned that Boorman shared private and significant experiences from his own life to assist Turner in portraying his character authentically.

In 2018, he played the character of Theseus Scamander in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. He reprised the role in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore in 2022. Additionally, Turner collaborated with his friend Danny King to direct and write the short film Shift the Plane in the same year.

He also starred as Shaun Emery in the BBC One mini-series The Capture in 2019, earning a nomination for the British Academy Television Award for Best Actor.

In 2020, Callum Turner took on the role of Frank Churchill in the film Emma, a comedy-drama. The following year, 2021, he played Anthony O’Hare in the romantic drama The Last Letter from Your Lover, alongside Shailene Woodley and Felicity Jones. And in 2023, Turner portrayed Joe Rantz in The Boys in the Boat, which was directed by George Clooney.
