Many adults who grew up playing with Barbie dolls and watching Barbie movies on TV associate the item with joy and nostalgia. Young children couldn’t get enough of it, whether to go on adventures like in Barbie in the Nutcracker or to be a fairy like in Barbie Fairytopia. For many adults today, the doll is nostalgic and associated with a happy childhood.

Before the new Barbie movie is released, let us look at the previous films in chronological order and where to watch them.

1. Barbie in the nutcracker (2001)

This is the first movie in the Barbie franchise. It was released on October 2nd, 2001. It is based on the book ” The Nutcracker and the Mouse King”  written in 1816 by Prussian author E. T. A. Hoffmann.

The story begins with Clara (Barbie), who receives a beautiful nutcracker as a gift from her favorite aunt. At night when Clara is sleeping, the nutcracker comes to life. He fights off the evil mouse king in Clara’s parlor. Clara hears the commotion, wakes up, and helps the nutcracker. However, before the mouse king leaves, he shrinks Clara with an evil spell. Clara teams up with the nutcracker to find the sugarplum princess who can free her of the spell. The movie is available to rent on Amazon Prime.

2. Barbie as Rapunzel (2002)

This was the second barbie movie. It was released on October 1st, 2002, in the USA. It is based on a German fairy tale book “Rapunzel” by the Grimm brothers. The twist in this adaptation is that Rapunzel has a paintbrush that can bring her drawings to life. This movie can be bought or rented on Amazon Prime or streamed on Vudu.

3. Barbie of Swan lake (2003)

This is the third movie of the franchise and was released on September 30, 2003. It is based on the ballet “Swan lake” composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, a Russian composer. The story begins with Odette, who gets cursed by an evil wizard Rothbart to turn into a swan. Initially, she gives up all hope. Then she falls in love, and a magic crystal shares a prophecy that she is the only one who can save the enchanted forest. She must find the courage in herself to defeat the evil Wizard.  This movie can be rented or bought on Amazon Prime or streamed on Vudu.

4. Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper (2004)

This is the fourth movie of the franchise. It was released on September 28th, 2004. This movie is also the animated musical of Barbie. It is the most loved Barbie move of all time.

It is based on the story of the Prince and the Pauper (1881) by Mark twain. Barbie plays a dual role in the movie. The first one is Anneliese, a blond princess, and the second is a brunette pauper named Erika. They interchange their roles for a day to free themselves of their duties. Anneliese gets kidnapped, and it is up to Erika to save her and bring peace. It is available to be rented or bought on Amazon Prime.

5. Barbie Fairytopia (2005)

This is the fifth barbie movie and was released on Nickelodeon on March 6th, 2005. Elise Allen and Diane Duane wrote this original story.  Barbie plays the role of Elina, a fairy with no wings. She goes on a magical journey to save the enchanted land of Fairytopia and find her wings. This movie is available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime.

6. Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus (2005)

This is the sixth barbie movie and the second to premiere on Nickelodeon on September 18th, 2005. This is the only barbie movie to be released in 3D so far. Barbie plays Princess Annika, who befriends a beautiful winged horse named Brietta. Annika’s family is turned to stone by the evil wizard called Wenlock. Annika goes on an adventure to save her family from the spell.

7. Barbie Fairytopia: Mermaidia (2006)

Barbie: Mermaidia is the 7th film of the barbie franchise and is a sequel to Barbie Fairytopia. It was released on Nickelodeon on March 5th, 2006. In this sequel, Elina travels to save her friend Nalu. She turns herself into a mermaid and travels to mermaidia to fight the fairy Laverna, who kidnapped Nalu. This movie is also available on Amazon Prime.

8. The Barbie Diaries (2006)

This is the eighth movie of the franchise and was released on May 9th, 2006. It is the first movie in which Barbie plays herself. The movie is about Barbie’s life as a high school student in her sophomore year. Barbie owns a diary that makes all her wishes come true. It is a story of true friendship, magic, and love. It is available to buy or rent on Amazon Prime.

9. Barbie in The 12 Dancing Princesses (2006)

It is the 9th movie of the Barbie franchise and was released on September 10th, 2006. It is based on the German fairy tale “The twelve dancing Princesses” by the Grimm brothers. The story follows Genevieve (played by Barbie) and her eleven sisters as they enter into a world of magic where all their dreams come true. The movie is available on Vudu and to buy or rent on Amazon Prime.

10. Barbie Fairytopia: Magic of the Rainbow (2007)

This is the 10th Barbie movie and the third film of the Fairytopia universe. It was released on March 11th, 2007. In this Barbie must learn to magically create the first rainbow of the season during the annual Flight of Spring. It could cause a bitter winter for 10 years if not done on time. Barbie and her new friends also have to fight off Laverna from stopping the Flight. This movie can be watched on Vudu and Amazon Prime.
