Around 5.1 million pounds raw beef products have been recalled by JBS Tolleson Inc. as they are said to be tainted with salmonella, according to the US Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service.

The service department has reported that the beef that is recalled was package and produced from 26 July – 7 September. Brands including Laura’s Lean, JBS generic and Kroger have been using these products.

This recall is the further expansion of the one made earlier in the month of October for the reasons mentioned. Now the total amount of the raw beef products that have been recalled exceeds 12 million pounds. The recalling of the raw beef products is linked with the salmonella outbreak.

Up till 15 November, the beef products and salmonella outbreak has affected 246 people in 25 states and has adversely affected their health. This was reported by the Disease Control and Prevention US Centers. Fortunately, there were no deaths reported, but a lot of people have been hospitalized due to this reason.

According to the recall notice,

FSIS is continuing to investigate illnesses associated with this widespread outbreak, and additional product from other companies may also be recalled.

The consumers have been asked to return or discard the recalled beef. The main concern of the Food Safety and Inspection Service is that a lot of consumers might not be aware about it and they may be storing the recalled beef with them. USDA said that the ground beef must be consumed only after cooking it at 160◦F and the other should be cooked at 145◦F.

The salmonella symptoms start within 12-72 hours of the consumption of contaminated food. Some of its symptoms include fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramps which last for a week. Some may recover on their own, while others have to be hospitalized.
